AUXIN
Fortitude Valley is an adult playground that facilitates the leisure and play of adults with various bars, clubs, restaurants and gyms. However, It seems that the built environment within Fortitude Valley has forgotten to cater for the social needs of adolescents who go to school in the nearby Fortitude Valley Secondary State College.
AUXIN would become a social oasis for adolescents within Fortitude Valley. It would offer a safe and secure environment that provides educational and social assistance. additionally, AUXIN would house sports and arts facilities which will allow users to explore and play.
The design for this project was informed by studying a phenomenon known as “phototropism” which is the process of plants bending toward the sun. This process is caused by a photoreceptive hormone called auxin which causes plant cells to contract.

The project’s function was infromed through the concepts of expandable space and public space within private space. These concepts allow for a flexible space that caters to needs of adolescent’s by providing spaces that vary in exposure and nature whether that be public, private, creative, physical or social.
